On Sunday morning, Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Services (MCFRS) arrived at the scene of a house fire in Derwood, located in the 8100 block of Pepper Ridge Way.
When firefighters arrived, they discovered a two-story single-family home in the Mineral Springs Village/Emory Grove neighborhood with strong flames on the rear deck, according to MCFRS Chief Spokesperson Pete Piringer. There was a significant response because the fire had already spread to the siding of the house and into the attic, presenting workers with severe fire conditions when they arrived.
Within ten minutes after arriving on the site, about 75 firefighters were able to put out the majority of the fire. Before crews arrived, all residents were aware of the fire outside and managed to flee uninjured. The fire has forced one family of four to relocate.
There have been no reports of injuries. An underused charcoal grill is probably the cause of the fire, which is thought to have started on the back deck. Two nearby houses were also damaged by the flames’ radiant heat.
