Yelp has released its list of the

top 50 Fried Chicken spots

in the U.S. and Canada, according to Yelp Elites. One Maryland restaurant, Ekiben, made it onto the list– coming in ranked 4th in all of the U.S. and Canada. Ekiben was co-founder by a graduate of Quince Orchard High School.

Founded in 2014 by Ephrem Abebe, Steve Chu, and Nikhil Yesupriya, Ekiben began as an Asian fusion fast-casual stand selling unique takes on Asian and Ethiopian cuisine from a hotdog cart at the Fells Point Farmers Market. Since its inception, the restaurant has grown to operate three brick-and-mortar locations in Baltimore– in Fells Point, Hampden, and South Baltimore– and a catering operation. Ekiben recently announced its

first restaurant outside of Baltimore

, which will be located in Frederick.

Yelp identified businesses in the fried chicken category, then ranked those spots based on the volume and ratings of reviews given by Yelp Elite Squad members for each business. All businesses were marked open on Yelp as of June 2, 2025. When available, all businesses on this list have a passing health score as of June 2, 2025. Yelp writes, “

Ekiben is a standout eatery beloved for its Asian fusion steamed buns and rice bowls bursting with bold flavors and creative twists. Known for fresh ingredients, friendly service, and inventive combinations like the famous fried chicken bun, Ekiben draws a loyal following from locals and visitors alike.

Outside of its fried chicken, Ekiben has earned additional national recognition– appearing on Yelp’s Top 100 restaurants list in the United States for three consecutive years. In 2017, Travel & Leisure named it the best place to get a sandwich in Maryland. In subsequent years, co-founder Steve Chu garnered industry accolades, including a 2018 semifinalist nomination for Eater’s Young Gun Awards and a 2023 semifinalist recognition from The James Beard Foundation for Best Chef of the Mid-Atlantic.

Chu, a Quince Orchard High School alumnus, has emphasized the restaurant’s mission to provide a welcoming space for everyone. He is also active in Youth Works, a Baltimore summer program that offers job training and mentorship, and has indicated plans for additional concepts that continue Ekiben’s community-focused approach.
