Tim Strachan, Resilient Advocate and Beloved Maryland Broadcaster, Dies at 49

, an inspiring figure who transcended a devastating spinal cord injury to become a successful attorney, revered sports broadcaster, and motivational speaker, has passed away at the age of 49 after a courageous battle with cancer.


Strachan’s journey was defined by a moment of profound challenge in August 1993. A highly-touted high school quarterback at DeMatha Catholic High School, his promising athletic career was tragically cut short by a swimming accident at Bethany Beach that left him paralyzed from the neck down.

Strachan then embarked on a path of academic and professional achievement. He graduated from the University of Maryland with a degree in communication in 1999. He then went on to earn his law degree from Georgetown University Law Center in 2004. His legal career was equally impressive, with significant roles within the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), including Attorney Advisor in the Office of Legislative Affairs and Deputy Director. He also served as Counsel to the esteemed Senate Judiciary Committee.

Beyond his legal accomplishments, Strachan became a beloved voice to Maryland sports fans. For 22 years, he served as a compelling color analyst for the Maryland Sports Radio Network, covering Terps football with insightful commentary and a deep passion for the game. His broadcasting career began as a student assistant coach for the Maryland football program, transitioning to a sideline reporter before joining the legendary Johnny Holliday in the booth. He stepped down from broadcasting in 2018 to dedicate more time to his family.

Strachan’s influence extended beyond the courtroom and the broadcast booth. He was a professional motivational speaker, sharing his powerful storyof resilience and encouraging countless individuals to overcome their own obstacles. His impact was recognized when he was named the 1999 Washingtonian of the Year by Washingtonian Magazine. Tim Strachan is survived by his wife, Leslie, and their children, Sophie, Olivia, and Luke.
