A retired federal law enforcement officer from Olney won $50,000 playing Bonus Match 5 after purchasing the ticket at Elbe’s Beer and Wine in Wheaton, a longtime lottery retailer that has been serving the community since 1951 and where he’s been a regular customer since 1977.  Full story below courtesy MD Lottery:

“A retired federal law enforcement officer and avid lottery player was out of town when he got a very interesting phone call. The lottery retailer he’s known for over 40 years called and told him to check his ticket because there was a $50,000 Bonus Match 5 ticket sold at the shop.

The Montgomery County resident was quite excited to get home to check his ticket, and sure enough, one of the three quick-pick combinations matched all five numbers for a top prize win on the daily game. Since 1977, the winner has been visiting Elbe’s Beer and Wine at 2522 University Boulevard in Wheaton and buying his Lottery tickets. July 7 was time was no different, except for the big win.

“Awesome” and “wonderful” were the words he used to describe how he felt as he turned to his wife and shared the great news with her.

The Olney man is a proud Maryland resident and loves the idea of playing his favorite Maryland Lottery games with proceeds going to fund State projects. Asked about plans for the winnings, he said he’s going to take a Maryland vacation, possibly to Deep Creek Lake, to keep his tourism spending local. He also plans to square up his finances and put money in savings.

Elbe’s Beer and Wine has reason to be excited as well. Not only did a long-time patron win a big prize, the store also receives a $500 bonus, equal to 1% of the prize total.”
