Eater DC has released an updated list of ‘
Where to Find The Best Sushi Around DC
’ that includes two restaurants in Maryland– both located right here in Montgomery County. The list was updated on July 14th.
Hinata (Bethesda):
Hinata, located at 4947 St. Elmo Ave in Bethesda, is a Japanese grocery store that was opened in the mid 90s by Owner Waka Sakita who once worked at Tokyo’s famous Tsukiji wholesale seafood market. The carryout sushi is a longtime favorite for many local residents, but somewhat of a hidden gem for those who don’t frequent the Downtown Bethesda area. We recently highlighted the Hinata
experience here
. Eater describes it as a “cozy, family-run carryout in Bethesda is a local favorite for made-to-order rolls and fresh sashimi at an affordable price point. Call ahead or shop for grocery items from Japan while waiting for takeout orders.”
Sushiko (Chevy Chase):
Sushiko is known for being D.C.’s first sushi restaurant, opening in the 70s in Glover Park. That location closed in 2013, but in 2008 the restaurant opened its Montgomery County location in Chevy Chase (5455 Wisconsin Ave). Chef Piter Tjan, Sushiko’s executive chef, got one of his first jobs as a sushi chef at Bethesda’s Raku. He worked there for three years before leaving to open Sushiko in 2008. He left Sushiko to work under Tyson Cole in Austin’s Uchi, one of the most popular sushi restaurants in America, and remained there until 2013 when he returned to Sushiko and has been back ever since.
