Maryland’s Emissions Exemption for 2019+ Vehicles: Are You Eligible?

Published On:

Did you know that if you’re a Maryland resident and the original owner of a vehicle with a 2019 model year or newer, the state offers a special exemption on emissions tests for original owners of the vehicle?

That’s right, If you were the very first person to purchase your shiny new car, truck, or SUV, you’re generally exempt from emissions testing for the first six years of your vehicle’s life as long as it’s a 2019 or newer. This means less hassle and one less thing to worry about during your vehicle’s early years on the road.

However, here’s the catch

: This exemption only applies if you are the original purchaser of the vehicle. If you bought your 2019 or newer model year vehicle used, it will still be subject to Maryland’s standard two-year emissions testing cycle. Once that initial six-year exemption period is up, your vehicle will then need to undergo emissions testing every two years, just like most other vehicles in Maryland.
