Two males have been taken into custody and charged by Maryland State Police in relation to a shooting on I-70 in Frederick County that killed a man from Montgomery County and injured two others.
According to Maryland State Police, the defendants are Jeffrey Josue Diaz, 24, and Francisco Javier Sanchez-Juarez, 28, both of Howard County, Maryland. Both are accused of first-degree murder as well as other offenses involving firearms. The Frederick County Detention Center is holding them without bond.
On June 14, 2025, officers from the Frederick Barrack of the Maryland State Police arrived at the 600 block of Lakeview Drive in Mount Airy at around 11:55 p.m. in response to a gunfire report on eastbound I-70, just before Maryland Route 27.
At the scene, police found a 2018 GMC Sierra pickup truck. When the shooting occurred, six adult men were inside the car. Two additional occupants received treatment for gunshot wounds, while one occupant—later identified as Eduardo Alexander Alvarado Urrea, 20, of Silver Spring—was declared dead at the spot. None of the other three reported any injuries.
After a thorough investigation, Sanchez-Juarez and Diaz were named as suspects in the shooting by the Maryland State Police Homicide Unit. On June 29, 2025, both men were taken into custody in Howard County without any problems.
The Waterloo, Golden Ring, and Frederick Barracks, as well as MSP’s Digital Forensic Lab, Criminal Enforcement Division, Forensic Sciences Division, and Special Operations Division, provided support to detectives from the Maryland State Police Homicide Unit. Important support was also given by the Maryland Transportation Authority Police, Howard County Police Department, and Frederick Police Department.
