Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Services (MCFRS) units responded to a major fire at a three-story apartment complex at 746 Quince Orchard Blvd. in Gaithersburg at around 10 a.m. on Tuesday.

The fire started accidentally, specifically when smoking materials ignited a mattress in a top-floor bedroom, according to MCFRS Chief Spokesman Pete Piringer.

Damage estimates from the fire were high, coming in at about $1 million. At least six families have consequently been forced to leave their houses. Efforts are being made to give the incident’s victims the help and support they require.

One Captain and one Battalion Chief were among the two firemen injured during the firefighting effort. Both are likely to recover after being taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries (NLTI).
