Did You Know the Bar That Invented Buffalo Wings Has a Location in Maryland?

Published On:

Did you know that Maryland is home to the bar that created the Buffalo wing? The famous dish’s creator, Anchor Bar, launched its Frederick outpost in 2019 at 5605 Spectrum Drive. In 2023, it established a second facility in the Leesburg, Virginia, area at 1610 Village Market Blvd. There are currently more than 50 Anchor Bar franchises in the US.

Are you curious in the origins of Buffalo wings? Anchor Bar claims that the story started on a Friday night in 1964 while Dominic Bellissimo was serving drinks at Buffalo, New York’s first Anchor Bar. When his pals arrived hungry late that night, Dominic requested his mother, Teressa, to prepare a meal for them. She mixed a batch of chicken wings in a tasty, secret sauce and deep-fried them, which are usually saved for soup stock. The outcome was an immediate success.

Following that evening, Buffalo wings were added to the menu permanently and became a worldwide sensation. Although many have attempted to duplicate them, Anchor Bar attributes the distinction of “Best Wings in the World” to their well guarded recipe.
