MCEA Denounces Ruling Allowing Opt-Outs from LGBTQ+ Inclusive Curriculum

In response to the ruling by the U.S. Supreme Court on the use of LGBTQ+ texts and family opt-out procedures, the Montgomery County Education Association (MCEA) released the following statement:

The United States Supreme Court’s ruling allowing parents to exclude their children from classes that include LGBTQ+ content has deeply disappointed the Montgomery County Education Association.

Although not surprising, MCEA President David Stein stated that the Court’s ruling seriously harms our community. Because it challenges a fundamental tenet of public education—that the diversity of our students and their families should be recognized and celebrated—the ruling has the potential to upend our classrooms and school communities. This is a component of a persistent and continuous assault on public education.

The possible harm this decision could cause to all kids strongly disturbs me, said MCEA Vice President Danillya Wilson. pupils who are pulled from classrooms with different curricula will be less equipped to participate civically in our multicultural and diverse society, and it is easy to anticipate that pupils may feel excluded when their peers are taken away.

MCEA is quite worried about how this decision will affect educators who are already overworked. The effect that this will have on how teachers actually run their classes was carelessly disregarded by the Court. When students opt out of classes and content, who will be in charge of them? Who is going to do this extra work? President Stein remarked.

MCEA is steadfast in its resolve to guarantee that every student is seen, even in light of the Court’s ruling. President Stein went on to say, “This decision comes just one month after we unite to celebrate the resilience and strength of our multicultural community.” Going ahead, Montgomery County will uphold the ideals of respect and tolerance, and we are dedicated to making sure that every one of our children and their families feels appreciated.
