Montgomery County Public Schools and the Montgomery County Board of Education Issue a Joint Statement Regarding Today’s Supreme Court Decision:

In the case of MAHMOUD ET AL. v. TAYLOR ET AL., which concerns the usage of LGBTQ+ texts and opt-out procedures for families, the US Supreme Court rendered a decision today. We are disappointed by today’s decision, but not shocked. Our efforts to establish a friendly, inclusive, and egalitarian educational system are made more difficult by this decision. Many important members of our diverse community also receive a disturbing message from it.

Montgomery County Public Schools continues to be a warm, accepting, and inclusive educational community that values and accepts every single one of our children. We’ll continue to foster an atmosphere where each student feels appreciated and encouraged. As a system that serves one of the most varied communities in the United States of America, equity is fundamental to our identity and one of our key values.

We will keep examining the Supreme Court ruling and formulate our next course of action in accordance with it and, more significantly, our principles. Before the new school year begins, further instructions will be sent to families and schools. Montgomery County’s diverse student body and family are reflected in the inclusive books that MCPS will continue to publish.
