After Phil Mendelson, the chairman of the DC Council, suggested removing the Commanders stadium deal from the next budget, a Washington Commanders representative issued a statement. The plans to launch in 2030 would probably be postponed if the agreement were to fall through. The Commanders’ complete statement is shown below:
In order to complete this project on time and provide the District with a top-notch stadium by 2030, the Washington Commanders are dedicated to working with the Council around the clock. More than just a stadium, this is an investment in local workers, families, and long-term economic potential that will change the area, the District, and our community.
Significant delays will make it more difficult for D.C. to draw world-class performers, major events like the 2031 FIFA Women’s World Cup, and top concerts. Above all, it will impede the creation of new jobs at a critical juncture for the District. We hope that the Council will keep working quickly to ratify this deal and give the people of D.C. a big victory.
