Update: Family Displaced, $100K+ in Damage After Fire Linked to Charging Batteries

A house fire on Rocking Horse Road in Rockville was attended to by Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Services (MCFRS) on Tuesday night.

When firemen arrived, they saw black smoke and a lot of fire at the back of the one-story house, said MCFRS spokeswoman Pete Piringer. The fire started on the back deck and spread into the house.

Numerous units participated in the reaction, including engines, ladders, rescue squads, emergency medical services, and support teams. Other pieces of equipment that assisted on the incident included PE719, PE725, PT725, A742B, CT733, and MAU733. With a temperature of 92 F and a humidity of 65%, firefighters faced difficult conditions while they worked.

Crews faced several risks during suppression operations, including as solar panels on the roof and in the yard, lithium-ion battery storage, loose wiring, and hoarding conditions within the house. A portable generator used to charge a stockpile of lithium-ion batteries was found to be the source of the unintentional fire. Over $100,000 is thought to have been damaged. The incident has resulted in the displacement of one family, consisting of three children and two parents.
