NASA Rocket Could Be Visible in Parts of Maryland Thursday Morning

Student experiments will be launched into suborbital space on a NASA sounding rocket. The window opens at 5:30 a.m. EDT on Thursday, June 26th, the day of the launch. The rocket might be visible in some areas of Virginia and Maryland, depending on the weather.


According to NASA, a Terrier-Improved Orion sounding rocket will launch the yearly student mission, RockOn, from NASA’s Wallops Flight Facility. The mission will be launched Thursday, June 26 to Sunday, June 29 from 5:30 to 9:30 a.m. EDT.

The launch viewing facility at the Wallops Visitor Center will open at 5 a.m. for local launch enthusiasts. Five sets of bleachers line the marsh in the launch viewing area, providing a good view of the launch pad and the range control sounds that is broadcast over loud speakers across the property. The entire Chesapeake region might be able to see the launch.

Fifteen minutes prior to launch, the Wallops YouTube channel will start a livestream of the mission for viewers outside of the local and regional viewing area.You can also get launch updates on the WallopsFacebook page.
