After winning $5 million on a $50 scratch-off ticket, a lottery player from Essex, Maryland decided to retire earlier than she had intended and set aside money for investments, family support, and the purchase of a new house and cars. The full narrative, provided by MD Lottery, is below:
An Essex resident who was hoping to retire at the end of the summer and was an ardent Maryland Lottery player is altering his plans. Thanks to a $5 million lottery scratch-off jackpot, she will be retiring a little earlier. When the winner claimed the prize at Maryland Lottery headquarters on June 24 with her daughter by her side, she said, “The first thing I started doing was jumping up and down.”
She wasn’t sure at first if she should play the $50 game $5,000,000 Fortune. I wanted to play, I thought. I’m not interested in playing. I’d want to participate. She said, “I don’t want to play.”
She usually prefers tickets with a bingo theme, so this was a bit of a change for her, but she was lucky enough to purchase one of the $50 games. Before revealing the numbers under the Your Numbers section—but not the prize amounts—she meticulously scratched to disclose the Winning Numbers. She was immediately drawn to the picture of a pile of money in a square that often contains numbers.
Her next course of action was to scratch the prize check QR code on the ticket and scan it on the ticket checker at the store where she purchased the ticket, as the ticket’s instructions state that a stack of cash is an automatic winner for the amount displayed. At first, she believed it to be $50,000.
“That’s good,” I thought. “I’m capable of doing $50,000,” she remarked. The jumping, however, began when she looked again.
After telling her daughter the news, she called her brother, who also began to scream at work, she claimed. She claimed that because she was so overwhelmed, she was having trouble breathing, so her brother reassured her by telling her to settle down and take it slow. The winner plans to purchase cars for herself and her daughter as well as a home.
She receives her Jeep. Then she said, “I get my Jeep.” Additionally, some will be used to support the winner’s religion community and family members.
However, the majority of the profits will be deposited into an account. She intends to invest and only take out money after her assets are established, per the recommendation of her longstanding employment. The Back River Exxon gas station, located at 100 Back River Neck Road in Essex, shares in the winner’s good fortune. The lottery that sells the successful ticket gives the business a $5,000 bonus.
