Following the Supreme Court’s ruling on Wednesday, June 18, which maintained Tennessee’s ban on transgender care for minors, Maryland Attorney General Anthony Brown released the following statement:
In a highly distressing decision, the U.S. Supreme Court upheld Tennessee’s ban on gender-transition care for minors, depriving transgender youngsters of care that is necessary for their well-being.
Medical care for transgender youngsters is crucial and can save the lives of children who all too frequently experience anxiety, depression, and suicidal thoughts. This is evident from science and research.
To transgender Marylanders and their families who are distressed and alarmed by this decision, please know that Maryland law protects you and that this finding has no bearing on your access to care. I support you because you are important and a vital component of Maryland’s communities.
