Burtonsville is bidding farewell to two local icons: Burt the Inflatable Mattress Man and the big red barn that has long been a part of the community’s landscape. This memorable send-off will be led by local personalities
Alex Tsironis (Mr. MoCo)
and Dave Golden of
Burtonsville 2.0 on Facebook
, who will host the event at the Mattress Liquidators and old 7-Eleven parking lot on Saturday, June 28th from 3:00 to 7:00 p.m.
If you’ve driven along Routes 198 and 29, you may recall the giant, smiling inflatable mattress man greeting passersby. For some time now,
Mattress and More Liquidators
has been hosting a going-out-of-business sale featuring significant savings, and this year it is a total liquidation. Alongside this, the red barn at the corner of Route 29 and 198– once home to the Bedding Barn and later Mattress & More Liquidators– is scheduled to be demolished to make way for a
new Wawa
.
The Burtonsville Bash at the Barn is a community event celebrating the storied history of this local landmark and paying tribute to Burt, whose presence once enlivened the area before his untimely demise from storm damage. The festivities are designed to be family-friendly and include live music from local band Affirmative No, who will perform original songs including a special event theme song. Food trucks featuring local favorites such as Catalyst Hot Dogs, Ruben’s, and Kona Ice will also be on site.
Attendees can participate in a series of creative contests, including a barn painting contest where participants can leave their mark on the barn with family-friendly artwork that will remain on display until the beginning of the new construction, a fitted sheet folding contest, and a barn animal noise contest that promises spirited, barnyard-inspired fun.
Additionally, there will be raffles, a silent auction, and various giveaways sponsored by Mattress and More Liquidators, Meadows Farms, Seasonal Roots, and other local businesses. This event not only marks a farewell to a beloved landmark but also celebrates the past, present, and future of Burtonsville. Residents and visitors alike are invited to join in the festivities and share in this memorable community send-off.
