$900 Million Resort Featuring 175,000-Square-Foot Indoor Waterpark to Open in 2026

Due to the impending closure of Six Flags in Bowie, Maryland, focus is shifting to the newly constructed Kalahari Resort in Spotsylvania, Virginia. The location is roughly 80 miles from the center of Montgomery County, Maryland, and less than 75 miles south of Washington, D.C.

In June, contractors celebrated a building milestone at the $900 million resort with Virginia Governor Glenn Youngkin. He issued an executive order to expedite development timeframes, highlighted $100 billion in capital investments obtained since taking office, and marketed Virginia as a top business location during the event.

The Spotsylvania resort, which will be the sixth location for Kalahari Resorts & Conventions, will have a big convention center, over 900 guest accommodations, and more than 175,000 square feet of indoor waterpark space. The resort, which located off I-95, is intended for families and tourists from the DC, Maryland, and Virginia area as well as beyond. Kalahari blends full-service lodging and convention facilities with its indoor waterpark activities, which are inspired by African motifs.

Forbes recognized Kalahari Resorts & Conventions’ dedication to workplace excellence and employee happiness earlier this week by naming the company one of America’s Best Employers for Women 2025.

As the park gets ready for its permanent closure on November 2, Six Flags America has canceled its annual Fright Fest event for 2025 and replaced it with the family-friendly Kids Boo Fest.
